Senegal

Rikolto can build on over 40 years’ experience in Senegal. In 2023, we reached 3,905 farmers.

Currently, we are running our Sustainable rice programme, and our Good Food for Cities programme in the cities of Dakar and Thiès.

Sustainable Rice programme highlights for 2023

Although some farmers were affected by early rains and bird attacks, which caused some to lose their harvest, there was an overall increase in net income. The new markets gained by FEPROBA and the acquisition of a marketing loan from La Banque Agricole, contributed to a 25% increase in the quantity of rice sold to the market. Building on the success of FEPROBA's adoption of urea deep placement last year, FPA decided to adopt the same technology, and trained 20 young members. A scientific committee comprising the National Research Institute ISRA, Africa Rice and CIRIZ evaluated the adoption of SRP within FEPROBA, showing a 16% increase in yield, a 23% reduction in production costs, and a 79% increase in net margin, among other benefits. This assessment is part of a multistakeholder process that aims to build evidence for the promotion of SRP at national level. Radio broadcasts were used to promote SRP rice among consumers.

Good Food for Cities programme highlights for 2023

We are working with the Hyacinthe Thiandoum (Dakar) and Daniel Brottier (Thiès) schools on GoodFood@School pilot projects. We worked with staff and parents to promote healthy eating and local food. We facilitated the creation of vegetable gardens, action plans and hygiene training for 86 canteen staff and vendors. A new snack bar in Thiès selling local food already generates between €458 and €763 per month.
