Rwanda

In 2022, we have started up our work in Rwanda. In 2023, we reached about 1,500 vegetable producers.

We are currently running our Good Food for Cities programme in the city of Rubavu. We aim to improve the horticulture production in western Rwanda, where a large proportion Rwanda’s horticulture produce is cultivated, and create a better enabling environment for food safety and the fight against malnutrition on national and city level.

Good Food for Cities programme highlights for 2023

We worked with partners in Rubavu and Musanze to promote regenerative agriculture and local healthy food. Over 2,260 farmers (including women and youth) from 6 cooperatives were trained through 4 demonstration farms. They adopted a common calendar, bought inputs together and sold 5,307 tonnes of produce for approximately €555,796.07. Rikolto also introduced a low-cost cold storage model, advocated for better policies and promoted healthy eating.

Projects

Promoting Economic Empowerment for Women and Youth for Sustainable Coffee Production in Rwanda (PEESCoP)

This programme supports 3,425 coffee producers, especially women and youth, in nine RWACOF coffee washing stations by promoting income diversification and livelihood improvement. It is co-funded by Rikolto and SUCAFINA Rwanda through the Kahawatu Foundation Rwanda.
